Macron: French EU Presidency To Seek Schengen Reform

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that under the six-month French chairing of the presidency of the European Council, he will seek political reform to the Schengen zone. Macron states that the zone, which encompasses EU and non-EU states and allows for travel between nations without visa checks, should have stronger external borders.

  • France takes over the rotating Council presidency from Slovenia on 1 January 2022.
  • Proposes a Eurogroup-style body for the Schengen zone, with regular meetings between relevant ministers. Says that there should be "a coherent policy of control of our external borders." Adds that "Protecting our borders is an essential condition to ensure the security of Europeans, meet the migratory challenge and avoid the tragedies we have experienced"
  • Hardline talk on migration likely to go down well in France ahead of next year's presidential election.
