Macron To Deliver Speech On Sovereignty Of Econ & Security Policy In The EU

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deliver a speech on the topic of "European sovereignty" in security and economic shortly. A link to the livestream can be found here: https://nexus-instituut.nl/video/live. Macron will be speaking at the Nexus Institute think tank in The Hague as part of a state visit to the Netherlands.

  • The visit has been overshadowed by Macron's comments over the weekend regarding Taiwanese security and the EU's geopolitical role in the world. Following his visit to China for talks with President Xi Jinping, Macron appeared to imply in an interview with Politico and Les Echos that France and the wider EU should not be seen as a close (see: https://marketnews.com/mni-political-risk-macron-c...for further details).
  • The Elysee palace has had to issue claims that Macron did not call for EU 'equidistance' between the US and China, calling the US "our allies, we share common values". This is not the first time that Macron's phrases have irked western allies. In late 2019 he stated that that “What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO,” resulting in criticism from the US and Germany.
