Maersk to Suspend Rhine Barges on High Water Levels

OIL PRODUCTS

From June 1, all barge transportation on the Rhine will be suspended due to high water levels, Maersk said, cited by Bloomberg.

  • “Please be aware that capacities will be limited, and some bookings may experience delays or cancellations.,” the statement said.
  • Rising water levels will likely lead to a sailing ban on part of the Rhine beginning June 1, according to Riverlake.
  • Levels at Pegel Maxau are expected to reach 750cm June 1, above the maximum navigable level.
  • “Current forecasts do not indicate how long this will remain in effect, but it is likely to last several days,” Riverlake said, cited by Bloomberg.
  • A prolonged sailing ban could tighten inland German supplies for some products and hamper refinery activity.
  • However, the European market in general has been largely well supplied at present.
