A new survey from AP-NORC has found that US support for Ukraine continues to diverge on partisan lines with 55% of Republican voters believing the US is spending too much on Ukraine, contrasted with 44% of Democrats who believe the US is spending too little.
- The survey shows that, whilst a majority of lawmakers in the House of Representative would likely approve the Senate-passed USD$95 billion foreign aid bill - which includes roughly USD$60b in new funding for Ukraine - House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) decision to slow-walk the package appears to have the support of the GOP base.
- AP notes: "At the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion, the public’s outlook on the outcomes of the war are pessimistic. Only 13% are extremely or very confident that Ukraine can win the war against Russia. Another 36% are somewhat confident and 49% are not too or not at all confident."
- The fate of the foreign aid package in uncertain. Johnson told reporters this week that he will consider the package at some point but again linked it with the seemingly intractable issue of border security. Considering that it is unclear if there are any border measures which can satisfy Republicans and Democrats alike, there is no apparent pathway to unlocking a vote on the package in the near-term.
