Manufacturing PMI Exits Contractive Territory in Oct

SOUTH AFRICA
MNI (London)

SOUTH AFRICA OCT ABSA MANUF. PMI 50.0 (FCST 48.0); SEP 48.2

  • South Africa's Absa manufacturing PMI increased by 1.8 points to 50.0, beating forecasts of 48.0 and exiting contractive territory of September.
  • Challenges of the Transnet strike, weakening global demand and persistent load-shedding hampered production. Transnet strikes contributed to poor exports.
  • Less severe load-shedding saw business activity improve and new sales orders recorded modest recoveries, however outlooks weakened on the back of concerns regarding future global demand.
  • Prices softened for the fourth consecutive month, implying a downward trend in PPI. Inflationary effects of the upcoming fuel price hike will be closely watched for in the next survey.
