Markets Looks for More Concessions in Ceasefire Talks as Sides Meet in Turkey

RUSSIA
  • On ceasefire talks, Ukraine has expressed low expectations going into the meeting – but both sides do appear to be coming closer on the negotiations framework.
  • Territory, however, remains the key sticking point. Kyiv seems to be falling away as a key objective for Russia, with the renewed focus in the separatist republics & Crimea, with Russia likely seeking a much stronger position in the republics before pressing to negotiate for a ceasefire - as evidenced by calls for a referendum in Luhansk to join Russia.
  • Mariupol is the bone of contention in Russia’s plans here and is a key objective for Russian to gain more bargaining power in talks.
  • Markets will be looking for small progress on the major issues, but are hold little optimism for a ceasefire at this juncture with uncertainty still high.
