McCarthy May Seek To Adjourn House As He Struggles For Votes

US

Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is reportedly considering pushing to adjourn the US House of Representatives until Thursday as he struggles to find the votes needed to be elected speaker.

  • Chad Pegram at Fox News: "McCarthy allies may move to adjourn when the House meets at noon. This will require a vote by a simple majority."
  • The anti-McCarthy block is unlikely to vote in favour of adjourning. Lawmakers opposed to McCarthy have expressed a desire to continue voting until McCarthy withdraws his nomination and will be emboldened by gaining an additional "no" in the third round of voting yesterday.
  • Former President Donald Trump issued a statement on social media this morning urging rebels to drop their opposition, leading bookmakers to slightly upgrade McCarthy's chances. Smarkets reports his implied probability of winning increased from ~30% this morning to ~50% shortly after Trump's statement.
  • Tara Palmeri at Puck: "I’m told from sources close to [Trump] that he’s been burning up the phone for McCarthy, but his pleas don’t seem to be making any impact. Even Trump loyalist Matt Gaetz [R-FL] hasn’t been moved."
