Medical Care Prices Pick Up (Even Before Annual Adjustment)

US DATA

Worth noting that medical care services had their biggest contribution to inflation of the year in September, at +0.03pp, comparing to flat/deflationary figures in every other month of 2023.

  • Big contributors were hospital costs (+1.20% M/M, highest since January 2022; that alone contributed 0.03pp to core, with professional medical services in flat growth (slowest since May).
  • Medical services are expected to re-accelerate in the coming months after the annual re-indexing (which had seen insurance prices depressed from Oct '22 onward).
  • While these series have often differed from the PCE equivalent, yesterday's PPI reading suggests a modest acceleration in PCE medical care services in Sept vs Aug.
