MEXICO-CANADA: Biden, Trudeau, Lopez Obrador Summit December

US

US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will travel to Mexico for a summit with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in December.

  • López Obrador made the announcement during a press conference this morning, ahead of a call with President Biden.
  • The call with Biden comes as disagreement continues within the USMCA over Mexico's energy policy. The US, backed up by Canada, asserts that Mexican policy contravenes the USMCA framework by preferencing state-owned Mexican electricity and oil companies over US companies.
  • López Obrador down played the trade dispute: "Relations with the United States government are very good and we do not want a lawsuit and so much so that yesterday [Foreign Minister] Marcelo Ebrard told me that they were looking for him from the White House because President Biden wants to talk to me on the phone today."
  • López Obrador added that Mexico's energy sovereignty is something that "is not subject to any negotiation, to any treaty, it is a matter of principles."
