Ministers Downplay Risks Of Early Elections Over Housing

AUSTRALIA

The government is expected to present its $10bn housing bill to parliament again next week, which has previously been blocked in the Senate. If it doesn’t pass again, then PM Albanese could choose to go to the Governor General to dissolve both houses of parliament, a double dissolution, and hold early elections. Senior members of the government have been commenting on the issue today to pressure the Liberals and Greens to support the legislation. They have also emphasised that the issue isn’t about a “double dissolution”. The Greens want rent caps and a $2bn increase in the annual spend on social housing in exchange for their support.
