Missile That Hit Poland May Have Been Launched From Ukrainian Air Defence System: AP

SECURITY

The missile that landed in Poland killing two civilians may have been fired from a Ukrainian air defence system, the Associated Press reports citing U.S. sources.

  • "Three U.S. officials said preliminary assessments suggested the missile was fired by Ukrainian forces at an incoming Russian one amid the crushing salvo against Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly": AP
  • As noted in previous bullets, such possibility was earlier flagged by OSINT analysts, based on the images of debris found near the impact crater. The analysis of those images suggested that the projectile was fired from a Ukrainian S-300 air defence system, presumably in defence against incoming Russian missiles.
  • If confirmed, the findings would reduce the odds of a direct escalation between Russia and NATO, while alerting the alliance's leaders to the risks posed by repeated volleys of Russian missile strikes on targets across Ukrainian territory.
