MNI BRIEF: Aussie Current Account Surplus Rebounds in Q4

Australia recorded its 15th consecutive quarterly current account surplus in Q4, boosted by the second highest trade surplus on record during the quarter, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The current account balance rose to a surplus of AUD14.1 billion in Q4, up from a revised surplus of AUD753 million in Q3. The trade surplus reached AUD40.9 billion, while the net primary income deficit fell to AUD26.4 billion following the record high deficit of AUD30.4 billion in Q3. The value of mining commodity exports exceeded AUD400 billion in 2022.

The terms of trade increased 0.6% to 111.7, up from 111.1 in Q3. Australia's net international investment liability position was AUD856.8 billion in Q4, a fall of AUD3.1 billion on the revised Q3 position of AUD859.9 billion.
