MNI BRIEF: BOJ Begins Experiments on CBDC; Continue March 2022

TOKYO (MNI)

The Bank of Japan said on Monday it had begun testing on a central bank digital currency, looking at the technical feasibility of the core functions and features required.

The central bank plans to develop a test environment for the CBDC system to study the basic functions that are core to CBDC, such as issuance, distribution, and redemption. This phase will be carried out through March 2022. The BOJ has said that the bank doesn't plan to introduce CBDC now.
