MNI BRIEF: Brussels Says EU Bond Market ‘In Transition’

(MNI) Brussels

The European Commission is pushing to boost liquidity and pricing across EU NGEU bonds that have performed relatively poorly against EU sovereign borrowers in recent months as interest rates rise, a spokesperson said Tuesday.

“The Commission...has announced the implementation of a framework which will improve the quoting of EU bonds on electric platforms and preparations to actively provide liquidity in EU bonds on the repo market,” the official added.

The spokesperson said that the EU bond market is in “transition” as it takes major steps towards improving liquidity in the bonds that are currently classified as Supranational rather than Sovereign instruments in financial markets and, unlike sovereigns, are not included in several investor benchmark indices.
