MNI BRIEF: Congress Condemns Riot, Moves to Certify Biden Win

(MNI) OTTAWA
WASHINGTON (MNI)

The U.S. Senate condemned rioters who broke into the Capitol building on Wednesday, with several leaders saying it amounted to an insurrection, resuming interrupted work to affirm Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election.

Vice President Mike Pence condemned the violence and said the rioters did not win the day, followed by Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who said an "unhinged crowd" had staged a "failed insurrection."

"They tried to disrupt our democracy, and they failed," McConnell said, pledging that the speeches would be followed by a certification of the election results.
