Europe's Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni confirmed Wednesday that the Escape Clause from the EU’s fiscal rules will be deactivated at the end of this year, as widely expected.

The clause was activated in March 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 crisis, then, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine it was decided last May to further extend the clause through 2023, although amid some controversy, given the relatively robust economic conditions at the time.

The commissioner noted that the EU economy has now recovered beyond its pre-pandemic level and has weathered the acute phase of rising energy prices so justifying the ending of the clause.
