MNI BRIEF: EU-US Joint Trade Body To Probe Semiconductors

BRUSSELS (MNI)

The EU and U.S. will set up a Trade and Technology Council with a remit to ease new technical barriers to trade in specific sectors, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today, with an immediate remit to look into the urgent problems facing trade in and supply of semiconductors.

Von der Leyen said that the EU had also assured the US that the bloc's planned digital level would be non-discriminatory and would not lead to double taxation. The two sides pledged to work towards a solution on the issue as fast as possible. The two sides also discussed solutions to the steel and aluminium dispute, agreeing to set up a working group to find a way to make progress. The Commission chief said that she expected the negotiations to move forward within a month.
