The EU will not necessarily follow Washington in slapping massive tariff hikes on China's exports of EVs to the EU, Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said Wednesday, as he noted China-US trade flows had remained resilient despite talk of "decoupling" in US circles.

While there are tensions in global trade relations due to overcapacity in China, Gentiloni said that what is needed is a "safer framework" for global trade without "encouraging the end of the global trade environment."
