MNI BRIEF: EZ Inflation Seen Lower From Mid-Year: ECB Lane
Eurozone inflation may peak by mid-year, but much depends on how the war in Ukraine develops, European Central Bank chief economist Philip Lane said Tuesday.
In an interview with Greek TV station Antenna, Lane said the momentum of inflation would slow down and the inflation rate would fall in the second half of 2022. "And we do think it will be a lot lower next year and the year after. It's very dramatic, but it essentially has an element that we do think will slow down and go into negative momentum," Lane added.
Around the same time the Lane comments were published, BIS General Manager Agustin Carstens warned inflationary pressures may not fade so quickly and said central banks needed to prepare for rates "more appropriate for the higher inflation environment".
