MNI BRIEF: Fed Announces Capital Requirements For Banks

(MNI) WASHINGTON

The Federal Reserve Board Thursday announced individual capital requirements for large banks, effective Oct. 1, partly determined by supervisory stress test results.

Earlier on Thursday, the Fed board considered a sweeping plan to make the banking industry raise more funds to guard against potential losses. The Fed Board voted 4-2 for the proposal, a rare level of dissension on central bank regulations. The document would raise capital requirements by as much as 19% on the biggest banks to provide a cushion against setbacks and reduce their reliance on debt and deposits.

Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller, both appointees of former President Donald Trump, voted no on the proposal.
