MNI BRIEF: No Discussion Yet of CBDC Policy Transmission: BIS

Any new central bank digital currencies must be in line with existing policy objectives and do no harm to either monetary and financial stability, a report published Friday by 7 leading central banks and the BIS says. Speaking to launch the report, BOE Dep Gov Jon Cunliffe, who is also Chair of the BOS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures, says any CBDC would be for each jurisdiction to judge as to want and need, but he said early discussions largely fix around payments systems, with little discussion yet of transmission effects from monetary policy.
