MNI BRIEF: Democrats Seen Clinching Both Georgia Senate Seats

(MNI) WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON (MNI)

Democrats won both Georgia Senate runoff elections, the Associated Press and CNN projected Wednesday, which should give them the balance of power in the Senate.

Jon Ossof's win comes after Democrat Raphael Warnock was also projected to defeat Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler in the state's other runoff, a special election to serve in the Senate through 2022. The victories set up a 50-50 split in the Senate, a deadlock they could break by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris casting tiebreaking votes.

Democrats will have unified control in Washington for at least the first two years of President-elect Joe Biden's term, with control of the White House and majorities in the upper and lower chambers of Congress. Some expect Biden to pursue another relief package that would include a broader agenda on issues including coronavirus relief and vaccine distribution in the first quarter this year.
