MNI DATA BRIEF: UK Manufacturing Output At Record High: CBI

(MNI) LONDON
LONDON (MNI)

The UK's manufacturing sector saw another surge in demand in July with domestic orders rising at a record pace, the latest CBI Industrial Trends survey showed. Additionally, output grew at the fastest pace on record (since 1975) and "manufacturers expect further record output growth in the coming quarter," Rain Newton-Smith, CBI Chief Economist said Thursday.

"Yet other challenges lie ahead. Acute staff shortages evident across the economy are biting deeply within manufacturing, with skills in short supply and the number of people isolating climbing steeply," Newton-Smith added. Cost pressures are rising as well driven by the ongoing supply chain disruptions and firms remain concerned regarding material shortages and plant capacity.

Total order books dipped to 17 in July, after Jun's reading of 19, while output in the next three months surged to 44, up 11pt, according to the survey published Thursday. Export order books improved to -7, with export optimism shifting to an above-average rate.
