MNI BRIEF: Yellen Says Demand for 100-Yr Bond Would Be Tiny

(MNI) WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON (MNI)

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Monday there may not be enough demand for issuing ultralong bonds, but indicated some interest in increasing issuance of longer-term debt.

"Most people feel that the market for that would be very tiny," Yellen said about the prospect for a 100-year bond in a New York Times event. "There might be some interest but it would probably be a very thin market with very limited interest. But issuing longer-term securities certainly seems to make some sense."

A former Treasury debt manager recently told MNI the U.S. could increase its coupon issuance later in the year as it funds additional fiscal priorities but is likely to rely on shorter-term debt issuance due to debt limit constraints in late July.
