MNI DATA BRIEF: UK Factory Gate Inflation At 2-1/2 Year High

LONDON (MNI)

Producer price inflation rose to the highest level since the Autumn of 2018 as rising costs of raw materials saw input factory gate prices rise by 5.9% y/y, the Office for National Statistics said Wednesday, rising from 3.3% in February. Input prices were last higher in September 2018, when they rose 6.0% y/y, and will undoubtedly pique the interest of Bank of England policymakers.

Output prices, the cost of goods leaving factories, rose to 1.9% in March, the highest level since May 2019, up from 0.9% in the previous month.

Transport equipment, and metals and non-metallic minerals provided the largest upward contributions to the annual rates of both output and input inflation respectively, the ONS noted.
