(MNI) Tokyo
TOKYO (MNI)

The Bank of Japan said Friday that it has been appointed Seisaku Kameda, former deputy director-general at the bank's Financial System and Bank Examination Department as the head of the Research and Statistics Department.

Outgoing department head Kazushige Kamiyama will become director-general of the bank's Payment and Settlement System Department.

Kamiyama will preside over the "Digital Currency Group" that the bank has created in the department to accelerate research on a central bank digital currency.

BOJ Deputy Governor Masayoshi Amamiya said Wednesday that the Bank currently has no plans to issue central bank digital currency, although he accepted the environment is changing extremely rapidly and the Bank needs to shift up a gear and press ahead with examining this matter in order to prepare to respond when necessary.
