COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- France and Spain both crossed the one million COVID-19 cases on October 21. Spain registered 16,973 new cases on October 21, the highest one-day total of new cases during the pandemic so far, while France's average daily increase in new cases over the past seven days stands at 25,713 per day, also a record high. French Prime Minister Jean Castex to deliver statement on new nationwide restrictions at 1700CET today.
- Belgium recorded 10,268 new cases on October 21, the highest 24-hour total registered during the pandemic so far. It was announced on October 22 that Belgian Deputy Prime Minister (and until last month prime minister) Sophie Wilmes had been moved to intensive care as she fights the disease. Belgium has recorded 10,539 fatalities due to COVID-19, putting it behind only Peru in terms of the number of fatalities from the virus recorded per capita during the course of the pandemic.
- On October 21, the United States registered over 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities for the first time since September 23, and the 1,124 fatalities is the highest 24-hour total since September 15. The burgeoning third wave in certain areas of the US has seen the seven-day average of daily fatalities reach 758 per day across the past week on October 21, the highest weekly average since September 21.
