MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-June 2023 Greece Election Briefing

Greece holds its second general election in just over one month on 25 June. The previous vote on 21 May, held under a fully proportional representation electoral system, delivered a hung parliament. The largest party in parliament following the election was then-Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ centre-right New Democracy with 146 seats, just short of the 151-majority threshold. Governing coalitions with the centre-left PASOK-KINAL or the right-wing Greek Solution were mathematically possible, but Mitsotakis forewent coalition negotiations with the intention of bringing about a snap election.

Greece is no longer the central focus of European financial markets as was the case in four elections from 2012 to 2015. Nevertheless, the country has been following a path back towards investment-grade status in recent years. As such, the outcome of the election will be watched to see if it is set to support this drive or potentially result in a fiscally expansive government that could see progress towards that target slow.

Within this election briefing we provide our Scenario Analysis on post-election outcomes, with assigned probabilities, followed by information on how the election works, the main parties running, and a chartpack of opinion polls.
