All timings subject to change.

Monday 17 May:

  • United States: The House of Representatives is expected to vote this week on forming an independent commission to investigate the 6 January storming of the Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. An agreement between the highest-ranking Democrat and Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee paves the way for legislation to establish a bipartisan commission. The House is also set to vote on a USD1.9bn bill intended to address security weaknesses at the Capitol. In the Senate, an initial procedural vote will take place on the Endless Frontiers Act, which is intended to bolster US investment in tech research to combat Chinese dominance in areas such as semiconductors.
  • United Kingdom: Three of the UK's four nations take their most significant step so far in unwinding COVID-19 restrictions. In England, Scotland, and Wales indoor hospitality and entertainment re-opens, with those in England and most of Scotland allowed to have small indoor gatherings at private residences. Individuals can travel abroad to one of 12 green list countries without having to quarantine on return. The state of the pandemic in the UK will be closely watched around the world as it is one of the first nations that saw a major wave of infections in early 2021 to reopen thanks to a mass vaccination programme.
  • India: Cyclone Tauktae is due to hit the Indian state of Gujarat. The cyclone is expected to be the strongest to hit the region in 20 years, at a time when the healthcare system is already struggling with massive COVID-19 patient loads. Over 150k residents have been moved from low-lying areas to shelters, raising risks of further COVID-19 spread.
  • South Africa: Trial of former President Jacob Zuma for corruption was due to get underway, but the date has been pushed back to 26 May to allow for a plea from Zuma's team to recuse Prosecutor Billy Downer to be heard.
  • Norway: Public holiday for Constitution Day.
