MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Week Ahead 19-25 July

All timings subject to change. Editors' Note: The next MNI Political Risk Week Ahead will be published on Monday 2 August.

Monday 19 July:

  • United States: Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) set to take procedural steps to bring about a vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill on Wednesday 21 July. This move has been met with uproar from Republican senators backing the bipartisan bill, saying that the process should not be rushed, with the text of the USD1.2trn package still to be finalised.
  • United Kingdom (England): All legal COVID-19 restrictions lifted in England, with rules on social distancing, wearing face masks, and working from home removed. There remains significant unease among some politicians and sections of the public given significant new caseloads recorded in recent weeks that has seen the UK become the epicentre of new COVID-19 cases globally.
  • United States: President Joe Biden hosts King Abdullah of Jordan at the White House. The Jordanian monarch will be the first Middle Eastern leader to visit the White House under the Biden presidency.
  • EU-UK: European Commission VP Maroš Šefčovič holds videoconference calls with both Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney and the new leader of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson. Tensions remain high between RoI-EU and unionist politicians in Northern Ireland regarding the implementation of the Northern Ireland protocol. The DUP remains staunchly opposed to the protocol insofar as placing a customs border down the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
  • United Kingdom:Cabinet Office minister and key liaison with the EU, Lord Frost, set to answer questions from the House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee regarding the UK's future relationship with the EU at 1445BST (0945ET, 1545CET). Questions likely to focus on the implementation of the Northern Ireland protocol, continued payments to the EU, as well as general bilateral relations with the bloc.
  • Turkey: Public holiday all week for Eid al-Adha/Feast of Sacrifice.
