MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS - Week Ahead 20-26 May

(MNI) London – All timings subject to change. N.b. The next Political Risk Week Ahead will be published Monday 3 June.

Monday 20 May:

  • SCO:Foreign ministers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meet in the Kazakh capital Astana. Continuing into 21 May, the meeting was intended to focus on promoting stabilisation in Afghanistan and combating terrorism and the drug trade in the SCO’s member states. However, the event has been overshadowed by the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash on 19 May. Iran has observer status in the SCO.
  • India: The fifth phase of the Indian general election takes place. This marks the smallest of the seven phases in terms of constituencies voting, with just 49 out of 553 up for grabs. The fifth phase sees, among others, five seats in Bihar, 10 in Maharashtra, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, and seven in West Bengal holding elections.
