Monday 21 November:

  • Germany-France: German Foreign Affairs Minister Annalena Baerbock travels to the French capital, Paris for meetings with her French counterpart Catherina Colonna as well as a one-to-one with President Emmanuel Macron. The Franco-German relationship has proved rocky at best in recent months, with disagreements on energy and defence policy.
  • European Union:European Parliament plenary session set to get underway in Strasbourg. Focus on the first day will be on the Commission’s statement regarding the state of play between the Commission and the Hungarian government regarding rule of law requirements and COVID-19 recovery funding for Budapest.
  • United States-Qatar: US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken travels to Qatar for a two-day trip to launch the fifth annual US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue. Despite vocal criticism from human rights groups of Qatar’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup (Blinken will watch the US take on Wales), the Middle Eastern state remains an important strategic partner for the West in countering the impact of a massive reduction in Russian natural gas supplies to Europe.
