Monday 3 July:

  • European Union: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen travels to the Spanish capital, Madrid, for talks with PM Pedro Sanchez. Presser at 1445CET (0845ET, 1345BST). On 1 July, Spain assumed the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. While the position does not come with any notable powers, it does allow the Spanish government to direct the focus somewhat of Council meetings. The focus of the presidency could shift following the Spanish general election on 23 July in the event of a change in government. Major topics for H223 include reaching an agreement on migration and asylum, reforming fiscal rules, and preparing for the June 2024 European Parliament elections.
