MNI POLITICAL RISK - Harris' Economic Agenda Takes Shape

US
  • US President Joe Biden delivered the keynote speech on day one of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, touting the successes of his administration and symbolically passing the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, who will formally accept the party’s presidential nomination later in the week.
  • It wasn’t lost on observers that Biden’s involvement in the DNC was limited to day one. And that his speech was bumped to 23:36 ET, well beyond a traditional East Coast prime-time slot.
  • Harris’ campaign yesterday unveiled plans to raise the corporation tax rate to 28%. The move, in line with plans outlined in Biden’s FY2025 presidential budget, would undo some of former President Donald Trump’s signature 2017 tax reform that brought the corporate tax rate down from 35% to 21%.
  • Trump will be in Howell, Michigan today to deliver a speech on crime and safety. The speech comes as Trump appears to have found sounder footing on countering Harris – focusing more on the economy than the personal attacks that have characterised his early campaigning.
  • A group of GOP-affiliated lawyers are working to get independent presidential candidate Cornel West on the Arizona ballot.
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters yesterday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had accepted a “bridging proposal” aimed at closing the gap on a Gaza cease-fire deal, but reports suggest that both Israel and Hamas remain sceptical of reaching a compromise.
  • Poll of the Day: Harris' polling bump has been fuelled by young voters.
