MNI POLITICAL RISK - Johnson Looks Set To Win Speaker's Gavel

US
  • Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) yesterday became the fourth Republican speaker nominee since former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted by hardline Republican conservatives and Democrats on October 4. A vote on Johnson’s nomination is likely to take place on floor of the House of Representatives at 12:00 ET 17:00 BST today.
  • There is a strong sense on Capitol Hill that the paralysis in the House will be resolved today. Johnson has more support amongst conservatives than Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), and less entrenched opposition amongst moderates than Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH).
  • US officials yesterday urged Israel to consider “humanitarian pauses” to allow aid into Gaza, but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire, arguing it would benefit Hamas.
  • The White House is preparing to today unveil its second major supplemental funding request in as many weeks.
  • Former President Donald Trump is enduring the most challenging week so far of his legal defence to multiple ongoing cases.
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Washington tomorrow for a three-day trip designed to lay the groundwork for a Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the APEC summit in San Francisco in November.
  • President Biden will host Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for a State Visit at the White House today.
