MNI POLITICAL RISK - Sec State Blinken Arrives In Israel

US
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel today to deliver a message from President Biden that, “the United States has Israel’s back.”
  • Blinken’s job will be to offer unconditional support to Israel but work to lower tensions and prevent the war escalating in a wider conflagration.
  • Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), a Republican presidential candidate, is preparing to introduce a bill compelling the Biden administration to re-freeze the USD$6 billion in Iranian oil revenue unlocked in a deal between Washington and Tehran last month.
  • House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) yesterday narrowly won an internal GOP conference vote for the Republican nomination to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives.
  • A speaker vote could take place today but Scalise has no clear pathway to locking down the 217 votes required to win the gavel, raising the prospect of a repeat of the marathon January ballots with brought former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to power but destabilised the chamber.
  • Poll of the Day: Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley is outperforming former President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in a hypothetical 2024 matchup with Biden.
