The Moldovan parliament has approved a new pro-Western government to be headed by incoming Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

  • The move comes after former Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilta resigned on Friday citing, "crises caused by Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
  • Moldovan President Maia Sandu said this week that Moldovan security officials had exposed a Russian plot to overthrow the Moldovan government through foreign actors and domestic criminal organisations to prevent the former Soviet republic from continuing moves to join the European Union.
  • Recean said in a statement following his nomination by Sandu: "As Moldova's PM-designate, I vow to steer our nation towards EU accession and to contribute to regional security in the face of ongoing geopolitical difficulties. Moldova is committed to progress and reforms. Together, we forge ahead towards a prosperous and secure future."
  • Recean tweeted today: "Together, we are ready to embark on this journey to continue advancing on the EU integration, implement all the necessary reforms & provide stability for our country."
  • The appointment caps a hectic week for Moldova which also included reports that a Russian missile passed through Moldovan airspace on Friday.
