N. Korea Fires Apparent Ballistic Missile After U.S. & S. Korea Start Military Drill

NORTH KOREA

North Korea fired an apparent ballistic missile toward the East Sea this morning, South Korean and Japanese authorities said.

  • YTN reported that an air raid alarm was issued in South Korea's island region of Ulleung-gun. It has not been officially confirmed whether the alarm was triggered by the North Korean projectile.
  • Japan said the missile has likely already landed outside of its exclusive economic zone, albeit Asahi now runs a report noting that Pyonyang may have fired multiple projectiles.
  • South Korean President Yoon will convene his National Security Council while military authorities are analysing the details of the launch.
  • The launch comes hours after North Korea escalated its verbal threats, noting that the U.S. and South Korea would pay a "the most horrible price in history" if they attack the country, likely alluding to its nuclear programme.
  • North Korea had earlier threatened to consider "more powerful follow-up measures" if the U.S. and South Korea do not stop their "grave military provocations," after they started a large-scale joint military exercise "Vigilant Storm" on Monday.
