NATGAS: Kazakhstan Aims to Boost Gas Exports to China

NATGAS

Kazakhstan is in talks to boost gas exports to China involving “significantly higher volumes” than current exports and with the possibility of an additional pipeline, according to Bloomberg.

  • Kazakhstan is seeking to boost gas production to cover growing domestic demand as well as increase revenue from exports and will be competing with neighbouring countries including Turkmenistan and Russia for Chinese demand.
  • “Despite reports of an economic slowdown in China, the demand for gas continues to grow,” said Sanzhar Zharkeshov, CEO of QazaqGaz NC JSC. “We hope to reach a consensus on increasing our export volumes to China and possibly other countries like Uzbekistan.”
  • Kazakhstan currently consumes about 21bcm of gas and exports about 4bcm to China.
  • A decision on a new gas pipe feeding China is due later this year and could take two to three years to complete.
