National Assembly Rejects Opposition Motions, BER Consumer Confidence Due

  • The National Assembly rejected the EFF's motion to unseat Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the DA's motion to establish an ad hoc committee to prove the Phala Phala game farm theft scandal. Parliament resumes its plenary session today and lawmakers will have the opportunity to grill Deputy President Paul Mashatile for the first time since his appointment earlier this month.
  • International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor slammed the ICC's decision to issue a warrant arrest for Russian President Vladimir Putin calling it "serious" and "worrying" and noted that the issue will be discussed by the Cabinet "as well as with our colleagues in the Russian Federation." South Africa will be hosting a BRICS summit in August but it is unclear if Putin was planning to attend it in person.
  • The Bureau for Economic Research will publish South Africa's Q1 consumer confidence at the top of the hour, which will conclude local data releases for this week. Meanwhile, the countdown has started for the next SARB monetary policy review, which is due in one week's time.
