Net Flows Moderate

JAPAN

The 4 major metrics provided in the weekly international security flow data from the Japanese MoF saw relatively modest net flows.

  • The data revealed that last week saw a modest round of net sales of foreign bonds on the part of Japanese investors, breaking a run of 2-straight weeks of net purchases, although the 4-week rolling sum of the measure remained in positive territory, after moving above the 0 mark for the first time since September in the week prior.
  • Japanese investors also lodged an 8th straight week of net purchases of foreign equities.
  • Meanwhile, international participants were net sellers of Japanese bonds for a sixth straight week, although the net amount saw a notable moderation as the BoJ met the consensus of sell-side economists while defying the market as it left its major monetary policy settings unchanged, as well as adding a more meaningful backstop to its YCC mechanism.
