New Elections Deadline Approaches

PERU
  • Peru’s congress is scheduled to hold a session today at 10am local time as a key deadline to approve a timeline for new elections looms at the end of the week. For reference, congress held a session on Wednesday afternoon but quickly suspended it after some lawmakers called for a discussion of new elections.
  • It is worth highlighting that if congress does not approve new elections by Feb. 10, President Dina Boluarte and lawmakers will continue to be expected to stay in power through 2026, despite ongoing social unrest across the nation.
  • Finance Minister Contreras, following a recent trip to meet with foreign investors in the US, said that one of the main concerns has to do with setting the (date for the general) elections.
    • "That is an answer which depends on the Congress of the Republic. I hope that consensus can be reached very soon," he expressed.
  • Social groups are expected to continue protests today.
