No Sign Of Senate Vote On Julie Su Labor Secretary Nomination

US

Punchbowl News reports that Julie Su’s nomination to be Secretary of Labor, is “on life support” as the Senate prepares to recess without a vote on her nomination.

  • According to Punchbowl, “Labor union officials complain privately they haven’t heard anything new on the nomination…” since the Senate HELP Committee approved Su’s nomination in late April.
  • Axios reported yesterday that, "33 Republican senators are calling on President Biden to withdraw his nomination of Julie Su..."
  • Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) said in a letter to Biden: "Given this present state of affairs, we respectfully urge you to withdraw the nomination... We appreciate your responsiveness to this request, and ask for prompt confirmation that the nomination of Julie A. Su is formally withdrawn."
  • As it stands, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is reluctant to move Su’s nomination to a Senate vote without firm yesses from two of the three wavering moderate Democrats. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Jon Tester (D-MO), and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ).
  • Schumer told reporters yesterday that Su, “is a very good nominee. And we are working hard to try and get her confirmed.”
