Nord Stream 1 Could Face Maintenance Delays: Habeck

NATURAL GAS

Germany should face the possibility that suspended gas flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline beyond the upcoming maintenance period will continue according to Economy Minister Robert Habeck on Saturday, speaking to Die Zeit newspaper.

  • "This could be rational, to keep overall prices and energy prices up in Germany and destroy unity and solidarity in the country. To rule this out is nothing that anyone in their right mind can do at this point," Habeck said, adding "You see a pattern and that can lead to this scenario,".
  • The Nord Stream 1 pipeline which is currently only running at 40% capacity, is due to be shut for maintenance between July 11-21 adding further pressure on German gas supply at a time when they are trying to increase domestic gas storage.
  • Lower flows of piped gas supplies from Russia are forcing European countries to source more expensive supplies from elsewhere.
