'Not Hours Away From A Deal' According To EU Diplomat: Wires

Wires reporting comments from an unnamed EU diplomat seemingly pouring some more cold water on comments from Irish FM Coveney that seemingly talked up the prospect of a deal.

  • "I do not have the impression we are hours away from a deal", as "substantial" differences in place on three main issues (fisheries, LPF, governance).
  • Also raises the issue that Barnier will need to run everything by member states before making decisions:"With trust also becomes the requirement of transparency". Member states need to know "exactly what is going on in negotiations,". Adds that the EU are "millimeters away from red lines".
  • Adds that they do not believe transition period (or other form of transition period with different name) can come into force: "It's clear that we cannot lengthen the current situation beyond the 1 Jan, no deal is no deal, there is no other option."
