NWE LNG Hits Year to Date High on Geopol Risks: Platts

LNG

NWE LNG prices hit a year to date high on Aug. 16, with the market spooked by ongoing geopolitical concerns, Platts said.

  • NWE LNG was assessed at $12.88/MMBtu Aug. 16, the highest since Dec. 1. The July average was $10.35/MMBtu.
  • Concerns have also boosted USGC spot FOB loading cargoes to a 2024 high of $11.89/MMBtu
  • Geopolitical concerns in the gas market have spiked since Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region near the Sudzha interconnector, providing around 42 mcm/d of gas.
  • Aside from the geopolitical risks to supply, the LNG market remains bearish in Europe, with imports in August-to-date down 10% on the same period in 2023 at 3.79m mt.
  • Platts said an uptick in demand is likely in September as the region looks to balance an expected drop in Norwegian nominations due to planned maintenance on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
