NY Fed Weekly Economic Index (WEI)

FED

The Weekly Economic Index (WEI) is an index of ten daily and weekly indicators of real economic activity, scaled to align with the four-quarter GDP growth rate.

  • According to FRBNY: The decline in the WEI for the week of July 3 (relative to the final estimate for the week of June 26) is due to a rise in initial unemployment insurance claims and decreases in tax withholding and steel production (relative to the same time last year), which more than offset increases in retail sales, consumer confidence, and rail traffic (relative to the same time last year).
  • Because the WEI measures changes over a 52-week period, the large positive reading also reflects the sharp deterioration in economic conditions during the same time last year.
