Opposition Shrugs at MHP's Draft Constitution, Won't Support "One-Man Regime"

  • Opposition parties shrug off MHP Leader Bahceli's draft constitution, saying it can't be taken seriously and is primarily an attempt to maintain the presidential system.
    • CHP's Altay says all parties are working on draft constitutions, but what Turkey really needs is an election and "we won't be in any process that strengthens the one-man regime."
    • HDP, IYI & Deva parties also criticised the MHP with a common theme for rejecting the presidential system in favour of a parliamentary one
  • AKP official Bostanci claims the party has almost completed its draft constitution due for 2022 and will unveil the proposal soon after the Ramadan feast.
    • Notes internal processes must be completed before other parties will be called upon for comment
  • Health officials say Turkey is close to reaching herd immunity with 25% of the population having been through vaccinations or had the virus itself.
    • However, the WHO says herd immunity is achieved at the 60-70% mark – so this is still some way off
