Orban's Fidesz Projected to Win Only 9 Seats in Upcoming EU Elections

HUNGARY
  • Tens of thousands of Prime Minister Orban’s supporters gathered in Budapest over the weekend in a show of force for the leader ahead of local and European Union elections on June 9. At the rally, Orban cast the elections as a choice between war and peace and portrayed himself as the one working to prevent Hungary from being dragged into military conflict.
  • However, Orban’s Fidesz is on track to win only 9 of 21 European Parliament seats up for grabs in Hungary, according to the latest Europe Elects projection published on the Euroactiv website (see image below). While that would still put Fidesz at first place, it would mark its weakest result in an EU election.
  • Meanwhile, Orban’s rival Peter Magyar, a lawyer, former diplomat and state company executive, has continued to gain momentum in recent polling, with his Tisza party projected to win 6 seats in the same poll, more than any other opposition party.
  • Magyar has leapt from relative obscurity to the nation’s most popular opposition figure, with his campaign pledges affirming his commitment to root out corruption and pivot back toward the European mainstream.
