Ottawa To Evacuate Families Of Embassy Staff From Ukraine

CANADA

The announcement today follows similar moves from the US, Germany, the UK, and Australia.

  • Ottawa has become more forceful in rhetoric towards Russia and last week announced a CAD$120 million aid package for Kyiv.
  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet is currently at a three-day virtual retreat and discussing the possibility of sending small arms to Ukraine.
  • Trudeau is expected to announce the cabinet's decision tomorrow.
  • The Canadian government announcement on the embassy withdrawal reads: 'The safety and security of Canadians, our personnel and their families at our missions abroad is our top priority. Due to the ongoing Russian military buildup and destabilizing activities in and around Ukraine, we have decided to temporarily withdraw Canadian embassy staff's children under 18 years of age and family members accompanying them.'
